LG V30S ThinQ: An updated LG V30 with more artificial intelligence and memory

The LG G7 did not arrive during the Mobile World Congress ( MWC 2018), but the company introduced a new cell phone called LG V30S ThinQ and explained its new strategy to the press.

The LG V30S ThinQ is precisely the beginning of this new strategy, in which the company is not “forced” to present every 12 months a new generation of its flagship phone, but wants to recycle the recent version of this device and make small changes that you think users are looking for.

The differences of the LG V30S ThinQ with the LG V30 that the company introduced last year are small. You find exactly the same design, processor, cameras and custom interface of the company, but now it has 6GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of storage (in the LG V30S + ThinQ version), instead of 4GB of RAM with 64GB or 128GB of storage ( in the LG V30 + version).

In addition, it includes more artificial intelligence, a new mode of photography called Bright Mode, more Google Assistant voice commands that are unique to the company and differentiating colors.

AI Vision: QLens, AI CAM and Bright Mode

QLens : A function of the camera in which artificial intelligence has the ability to recognize what is in front of it to offer you more information, similar to what Google Lens or Bixby Vision offers. At the moment, QLens is an integrated option in the camera app that allows you to search for products (or related products) on Amazon, related images on Pinterest or allows you to scan QR codes.

During my tests with a preproduction unit, the LG V30S managed to identify few objects, but it will surely improve over time.

AI CAM: Another option of the LG V30S that is inside the app of the camera and tries to identify the objects that you are trying to capture to adjust the settings and take a better picture.

During my tests, LG’s artificial intelligence managed to detect people, tables, chairs and food, among others. However, in many cases it only shows you words that want to indicate what you have in front of you, that many times are not correct and confused. Once the object is detected, LG shows you an icon with the name at the bottom of the viewer.

Bright Mode: A mode to take better photos in low light, which is automatically activated by the cell phone when it detects those conditions, but you can also simply suggest activating it.

Voice AI

Exclusive LG commands that work together with Google Assistant to let you control apps and change settings just by using your voice.

More colors

Along with the new strategy, LG also wants to offer distinctive colors and differentiate a bit in the market.

On this occasion, the LG V30S ThinQ will be available in new Moroccan blue color, which has been updated with a greenish tint, and the new platinum gray, which gives some elegance.

LG ThinQ

The LG V30S is the first cell phone of the company that is part of ThinQ, the artificial intelligence platform that allows all kinds of devices to communicate with each other.

Price and availability

The V30S ThinQ will be available in March, initially in South Korea. Its price has not been revealed, but it will arrive in the USA.

First impression

The LG V30S ThinQ is not the LG G7 that we expected and it is a small change of the excellent cell phone that we really liked last year. It is possible that the LG V30S suffers from the same evil as the LG G6 , which was very good but came with an old processor at a time when  cell phones like the Samsung Galaxy S9 are expected to arrive with the new Snapdragon 845 processor (instead of the Snapdragon 835).

The key could end up being its price, but I doubt it will be cheaper than the LG V30 currently, especially when the company said that in some markets the two cell phones will continue to be sold and that some of these developments would come as a software update.
