Motorola Moto G6 Plus Review

A beautiful and affordable phone - that can handle your basic needs.

Motorola has renewed the G series with three phones: Moto G6 Play ( $ 224.74 on ) , Moto G6 ( $ 288.79 on ) and Moto G6 Plus ( $ 389.99 on ) . The largest and most complete of the devices is also the one that best competes in the mid-range with terminals that are already on the market in price and features such as Honor 9 or Nokia 6 ( $ 229.00 on ) .

The Moto G6 Plus that we have reviewd on this occasion is the 4GB version of RAM and 64GB of storage, although there is also a 6GB version with 64GB of storage and even a 128GB that is sold in some selected markets

Our tests have shown that the Moto G6 Plus surpasses its predecessor, the Moto G5 Plus ( $ 229.99 at Walmart ) , not only in specifications or processing, but also in adding a more attractive design that makes you think you are facing a high-end phone, due to its elegant design.

Price and availability

  • Moto G6 Plus price in UK: From £269.
  • Moto G6 Plus price in the United States: This model is not available at the moment.

The design of the Moto G6 Plus is the same as that of its younger brothers. It is made of glass and is very attractive, although it is a fingerprint magnet, something similar to what happens to many phones this season like the Huawei P20 family ( $ 569.88 on ) .

A big disappointment of this family of Motorola devices is that they have not eliminated the front edges. Although the sides have tried to reduce them, definitely the intention of the manufacturer was not to offer a phone adjusted to the latest fad of fashion.

In particular, phones like the Honor 7X ( $ 199.98 on ) of a similar price have been better adapted to the fashion of reducing the bevels, although others like the Honor 9 or the Nokia 6, which also have a similar cost, keep the edges, but they offer a great competition to a nice phone but that does not generate many surprises.

The Moto G6 Plus follows the hallmark of Motorola’s latest phones, its rear circular dial, where the dual camera is located and which is slightly more pronounced on the Moto G6 Plus than on the Moto G6, which It makes a danger to use the phone without a case.

The fingerprint sensor is on the front in the lower area. On the right side are the volume adjustment and power and lock buttons and below it the USB Type C port and the headphone port.

The 5.9-inch screen of the Moto G6 Plus is 18: 9, it has several modes of tones and colors and its size is ideal, although we could say that it has too many edges, something that prevents it from being fashionable.

The Moto G6 Plus has a 5.9-inch screen. It is the largest phone compared to the Moto G6 Play and Moto G6, which are 5.7 inches. Its resolution is 2,160×1,080 pixels, it has Gorilla Glass 3 glass and an aspect ratio of 18: 9, which allows it to adapt to the most popular content viewing mode of the last year.

Even though you can see content in the 18: 9 format, the Moto G6 Plus disenchant by having so many bevels around, when the phones of the competition have reduced them. Its screen gives you bright colors and reading in bright situations is correct, a detail that improves compared to the Moto G6 panel, which with the reflection of sunlight tends to look darker.

The Moto G6 Plus has an option called Color Mode, which allows you to adjust the color temperature of the screen. You can adjust it in three ways:

  • Warm screen : Makes the white of the screen slightly yellower, shows improved color saturation, tends to be an option that tires the eye less.
  • Neutral screen : The white color looks much brighter.
  • Cold screen : The white of the screen tends to be bluish, and that affects the rest of the colors.

The Moto G6 Plus has a correct performance without obtaining an outstanding in our tests. If you are looking for a phone to send text messages, social networks and take some pictures – not very professional -, this phone meets what you need.

In our tests with video games we have not had major problems, although it is also true that in multitasking mode we have observed slowdown. If you have several open websites, Instagram and also want to play Need for Speed , it is likely that the phone does not have the best performance.

Despite not having the best design of the season, the Moto G6 Plus exceeds some of the phones that can match in features. Of course, the Honor 9 last year is still an excellent option with a more elegant front design and a slightly lower price. There are also newer phones on the market that are in the same cost range of this equipment and that we will analyze soon, such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 or the Samsung Galaxy A6 .

The Moto G6 Plus comes with Android 8.0 Oreo in almost pure state, an ideal detail for those who like to have the operating system without additional interfaces. Of course, brings some applications in addition to Google, such as Linkedin and Outlook.

Compared to the Moto G6, this device has a better graphic performance and also general processing. The differences are not abysmal, but they are enough to make you choose a slightly larger phone and it also has a slightly higher camera.

If we compare it as the Moto X4 , the difference in processing is low, and this Motorola phone has water resistance, a detail that might interest you, although its battery and screen are lower.

The fingerprint sensor located at the bottom works correctly.

The Moto G4 Plus has a fingerprint sensor that works correctly, but also unlike the Moto G6 has facial recognition. This is not the safest unlocking feature, because it does not have a three-dimensional recognition sensor that is 100 percent reliable.

The Moto G6 Plus has a 3,200mAh battery. Using the device every day we noticed that without problems we reached the end of the day with enough energy, despite the fact that we sent many messages and used the camera in many opportunities. In general, if you start using it at 7:00 am, you will have enough battery to not charge it until 10:00 pm

Below is a comparison of the battery performance of other devices compared to the Moto G6 Plus. Our tests are performed in an environment with controlled values.

The Moto G6 Plus has a double camera that protrudes a lot from the device.

The main camera of the Moto G6 Plus is double, 12 megapixels with aperture f / 1.7 and 5 megapixels. The device allows to make portrait mode, and it can be used to blur objects. The camera includes other modes such as trimming or direct color – which allows you to change the tones of a photo.

On the other hand we have the front camera with 8 megapixels and LED flash, which adds automatic or manual beauty effect, group selfies and facial filters. In general, the photos of your camera will not surprise you, although they are enough for a phone of its price.

This is a photo without “portrait” mode.

Among other features we find others similar to Moto G6, such as trimming, which allows you to cut a subject and place it in any background; direct color, which lets you highlight a color in the photograph and places the rest in black and white and also more traditional options such as panoramic, text scanner or facial filters.

Moto G6 Plus vs. Moto G6

The Moto G6 Plus is slightly larger than the Moto G6, are made of the same material, but have more differences inside

The Moto G6 Plus and Moto G6 have big differences. The first of these is the screen, which in the Moto G6 Plus is 5.9 inches and the smallest 5.7 inches. The processor is also a differential aspect, because the Plus has a Snapdragon 630 chip and the G6 the 450.

The Moto G6 camera is double 12 megapixels with aperture f / 1.8 plus 5 megapixels and the G6 Plus of 12 megapixels with aperture f / 1.8 plus 5 megapixels. Unlike the Moto G6 that comes in 3GB or 4GB versions, the Moto G6 Plus comes in 4GB and 6GB versions of RAM, slightly improves the battery and has NFC in all the versions that are for sale.

Moto G6 Plus vs. Moto G6 Play

The Moto G6 Play is the phone with the lowest features of the G6 family. It has a screen of 5.7 inches of inferior quality, its processor is the Snapdragon 427 that has a lower performance and has only a main camera of 13 megapixels and a front of 8 megapixels. The most interesting thing about this phone is its battery, 4,000mAh, higher than the other two in the family.

The Moto G6 Plus is a complete phone with a correct processing for daily use and has a double camera that makes beautiful photos, although not spectacular. Because it does not have a modern design, we recommend you to take a look at the Honor 9 which also has bevels and costs from 299 euros or the Honor 7X which has a price from US $ 199 in the United States.

A great advantage of Moto G6 Plus that the phones of the competition do not have is that it has Android Oreo with a practically pure interface, something that many users usually enjoy. Its bright casing makes it look luxurious, its size despite being large is comfortable for daily use and its battery will reach you to give free rein to your activities throughout the day without major inconveniences.
