OnePlus 6 Preview: Everything you need to know
The OnePlus 6 is the new bet of the Chinese company to rival mobile phones such as the, the , the LG G7 ThinQ and the at a lower price.
This is the company’s eighth cell phone, the seventh flagship of OnePlus and its most expensive cell phone to date.
Despite this, the OnePlus 6 is still cheaper than many other high-end cell phones and the company continues with the same strategy of pleasing its fans by integrating very similar specifications to the best cell phones in the market.

Elegant design … with eyebrow or notch
The first thing you will notice about the OnePlus 6 is its eyebrow or notch , very similar to that of the LG G7 ThinQ, theand iPhone X.
It is true, although the eyebrow is smaller than the iPhone X and is more similar to the LG G7 ThinQ, it is not for everyone. OnePlus seems to understand this and will enable an update in the future to hide this eyebrow through software.
However, thanks to this eyebrow, the company was able to integrate a 6.28-inch screen that is larger than the 6-inch screen of the OnePlus 5T ( $ 533.89 on Amazon.com ) , but does not increase the size of the new phone (155.7×75. 4×7.75mm vs. 156.1x75x7.3mm).
The bottom bezel of the OnePlus 6 is the largest of all, but it is smaller than the OnePlus 5T. The screen has curved corners and the glass has a slight curvature on the screen that makes it look more modern and makes it feel good in the hand.
The back of OnePlus 6 is made of glass, instead of metal like the OnePlus 5T, 5, 3 and 3T. The OnePlus 6 of bright black color (Mirror Black) is the one that shows more this glass, since it easily reflects the light and attracts more traces. The OnePlus 6 black (Midnight Black) does much less and the white (Silk White) even less.
Despite this change, the edge of the cell phone is still metal, which is good because it offers durability.
The OnePlus 6 feels good in the hand, its buttons feel as solid as its predecessor and maintains its headphone jack, the USB-C port with the same fast charge Dash Charge of its predecessors and a speaker located at the bottom.
The slider that allows you to change the ringtone status as a silence and do not disturb is now located on the right edge instead of the left edge.
Water resistance … not much
The main weakness of the OnePlus 6 is in its resistance to water.
The company says the OnePlus 6 is more water resistant than its predecessors: the cell phone withstands drizzle and accidental falls into the toilet.
However, the OnePlus 6 does not have an IP67 certification (up to 1 meter deep) like the Huawei P20 Pro and the iPhone X, or IP68 (up to 1.5 meters deep) like the Galaxy S9 and the LG G7 ThinQ.
Although a certification is not everything, it offers enough confidence to take a little more risk and not depend so much on luck.
Cameras: Optical stabilization, 480fps video, front portrait
When you look at the specifications of the OnePlus 6 cameras everything seems to be intact compared to what the OnePlus 5T had.
However, despite maintaining its combination of 16 megapixel and 20 megapixel cameras, the OnePlus 6 integrates optical image stabilization and a 19 percent larger sensor in the main (the first of these cameras). This means that the cell phone could take clearer photos in low light situations and help the photos to be less blurred by the natural movement of our hands.
The other novelties include the possibility of taking photos with a blurred background (portraits) both with the rear cameras, and with the front camera of 16 megapixels (although this will come with an update).
In addition, this OnePlus phone allows recording slow-motion video at 480fps in HD resolution, instead of 120fps in HD resolution offered by its predecessor.
Gestures of navigation, game mode, reading mode and more functions
The OnePlus 6 integrates Android navigation buttons on the screen as its predecessor, but also allows you to hide this bar to enable navigation controls through gestures – similar to what the iPhone X offers and equal to what the company has tried from the latest beta versions of Android Oreo for the OnePlus 5T.
For example, the OnePlus allows you to return to Home by sliding up, while you can slide up and to open the screen of recent apps. In addition, you can slide up from the bottom right or left to return.
The game mode (Gaming Mode), previously known as Gaming DND, allows notifications to interrupt, but also improves latency to have a better experience. In addition, the cellular system automatically reduces the amount of data assigned to each app in the background, while giving priority to the data that can be used by the video game you are playing.
Also, the OnePlus 6 maintains attractive reading mode, shortcuts through gestures (O, V, S, M, W) on the lock screen (off) and a nighttime theme like its predecessor. In addition, you can protect with password or fingerprint reader access to different apps.
On the other hand, the OnePlus 6 is still compatible only with GSM, but now it is compatible with 40 bands of this class in the North American and European version, while the Asian version has compatibility with 37 GSM bands. The OnePlus 6 is an unlocked cell phone, so it does not necessarily depend on an operator’s unlocking system.
In addition, it has two SIM card slots (DSDS) with support for LTE networks in both.
It is the first with Android P beta
The OnePlus 6 has one of the most fluid mobile software that we can find in a cell phone and everything is partly thanks to different optimizations of the company and a practically pure Android interface.
However, it is the first time that Google allows third-party (non-Google) phones to test the next generation of Android, now known as Android P.
Since its launch, OnePlus 6 will be able to enjoy the Android P beta version, just like the Pixel 2 ( $ 649.00 in Walmart ) , Pixel 2 XL ( $ 1,139.00 in Amazon.com ) , the and a few other phones through the beta program of Google.
The OnePlus 6 is postulated as one of the best cell phones on the market, with specifications, functions and power needed to challenge the best.
However, it seems to me that the company has changed its perspective a bit by sacrificing some functions more clearly to have a lower price than the competition.
This is a bit different from what the company achieved with the OnePlus One ( $ 395.00 on Amazon.com ) , 3 and 3T, competing with the best without such clear sacrifices.
This sacrifice is the water resistance, since this cell phone does not have a certification nor offers as much confidence as the Galaxy S9, LG G7 ThinQ, Huawei P20 Pro and iPhone X do.
Also, the increase in price (US $ 30 more) brings it closer to the prices of other high-end cell phones, so they place it in a less privileged position when competing with more recognized companies and with physical support in more parts of the world.
Stay tuned that we will soon have our full OnePlus 6 Review.
