Hands-on OnePlus 6T: still a “killer” of the high-end?

It is not surprising that OnePlus has announced its new smartphone called, as tradition dictates, simply OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T

It’s that time again: OnePlus releases, as since 2015, his second smartphone for the current year from the stack. What has OnePlus now integrated into the 2018 T model and what are the differences to the OnePlus 6 without T attachment? Our first impression provides the answers to the most important questions about the OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T – Availability and price

The brand-new OnePlus 6T

The OnePlus strategy is now well known to all. Every six months, the manufacturer launches a new device. OnePlus 6 was one of the best smartphones of 2018, but OnePlus has decided to raise the bar even further with this new smartphone. For this reason, the brand also slightly increased the prices of their device.

In exchange for this price increase, OnePlus offers more memory. Thus, the first model of the OnePlus 6T with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory is available at a price of 559 euros (compared to 519 euros of OP6). The versions with 8GB / 128GB and 8GB / 256GB cost 589 euros and 639 euros respectively.

For those interested, it is possible to book the OnePlus 6T online as of October 30. Deliveries will arrive on November 6, the day of its global launch.

A small notch in the form of a drop of water

The OP6T retains the same format as its predecessor, unlike the notch.

As often happens with the T model, OnePlus is not a true revolution in design. Therefore, this OnePlus 6T maintains an appearance similar to that of the previous generation. However, there is a small change at the top of the screen. The notch has been reduced considerably and now takes the form of a drop of water. As a result, the OP6T screen is wider and now shows a diagonal of 6.4 inches keeping more or less the same format (157.5 x 75.7 x 8.2 mm versus 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.75 mm). It is also more aesthetic and more comfortable to use.

Another new feature is that the fingerprint reader on the back has disappeared and has been replaced by a fingerprint reader under the screen. OnePlus promises to offer the fastest reader in the field (350 ms) and I must admit that my first tests seem to confirm these claims. Compared with the Mate 20 Pro, OnePlus 6T is slightly faster. However, it is still a bit slower than with a traditional reader.

Unfortunately, the concession to use this new feature is the disappearance of the mini-jack. While OnePlus states that this lack is due to a request from their community, the reality is probably more technical. The fingerprint reader under the screen requires space and that is why dispensing with the mini-jack has been the main cause of this evolution, or at least we think so and have all the logic.

Otherwise, there are no changes. Metal frame, glass in the back (a little slippery, I must admit), slightly rounded corners, buttons for quick adjustment of sound, volume buttons in the same place. .. In 6T we find all the elements that made us love the OnePlus 6.

Its classic AMOLED screen but now larger

Thanks to this small notch, OnePlus can offer a larger screen, which now reaches up to 6.4 inches (compared to 6.28 inches), without increasing the size of your terminal. It has Gorilla Glass 6 to be well protected. The new OP6T maintains the 19.5: 9 ratio and offers a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. As for the full screen without borders that some thought would arrive, it will probably be necessary to wait for OnePlus 7.

The AMOLED screen allows you to display bright colors and excellent contrast. The viewing angles are good, as is the brightness. The only defect at first sight (if I may say so) is the tendency to turn blue, but it is possible to change the default parameters in the settings. A configuration system is also available. All you have to do is set the cursor on a gauge that goes from cold to hot.

Fingerprint reader under the screen

Fingerprint reader under the screen for the OnePlus 6T.

As explained above, the OnePlus 6T opens the fingerprint reader below the screen for the Chinese manufacturer. This one is located in the inferior part of the same one, in a level slightly inferior to the one of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The smartphone offers the possibility of registering several fingerprints, as is the case with traditional readers, and although doing so is very simple, it requires a little more time than for the traditional reader. It is also necessary to press the screen more.

In use, it is very practical. However, there is no tactile feedback when the screen is pressed. The smartphone is unlocked quickly. Most of the time, there is no need to use it because the facial recognition offered by the OP6T is faster.

Android Pie on the menu

Good news! The OnePlus 6T has the latest version of Android, Android Pie. The opposite would have been surprising since the update was published in OnePlus 6. Oxygen OS in its new version is a pleasure to use. The operating system is very fluid, gestural navigation is very easy. Applications open and close very quickly.

OnePlus also offers several new features with Pie, including an improved game mode and a Do Not Disturb mode with adjustable options. You also have access to more personalization in colors.

Fast as lightning

The OnePlus 6T assumes one of the strengths of the OnePlus 6: its technical sheet. We have the Snapdragon 845 processor, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. The model that I currently use offers 8 GB of RAM. However, the 6 GB model is also sufficient and very efficient. Only the most demanding players should enjoy this small extra RAM for comfort.

You will not be surprised to know that OnePlus 6T is among the fastest smartphones on the market. Soon I will share the different results of the benchmarks. In AnTuTu, where I did have time to try it, he scored 295,870 points. The phone did not overheat.

OnePlus 6T – Camera

OnePlus 6T offers the same photographic configuration as its predecessor, both in the main camera and in the selfie. Thus, the rear camera consists of:

  • A 16 MP sensor, f / 1.7, 25 mm, 1 / 2.6 “, 1.22 μm, OIS, PDAF
  • A sensor of 20 MP (16 MP), f / 1.7, 25 mm, 1 / 2.8 “, 1.0 μm, PDAF

As for the front, we find a 20-megapixel lens.

It is at the software level that OnePlus has made efforts for more efficient image processing, and in addition to the improvements made in the portrait mode, there were slight problems of sharpness in the past. In general, small modifications made to the OnePlus 6T can create significant added value compared to its predecessor. While I wait for my complete test, I let you judge with these photos that I have taken with the smartphone.

A bigger battery

Type-C USB and nothing mini-jack.

Finally, the latest and most significant new feature of this OnePlus 6T is the size of the battery. The smartphone has a capacity of 3,700 mAh (compared to the 3,300 mAh of the OP6). While the time I have used the device does not allow me to have an idea 100% of the resistance of it, its autonomy seems correct, but not necessarily better compared to the previous generation. A day of autonomy with a standard use of the smartphone seems to be the minimum that we can demand.

OnePlus also offers the Dash Charge fast charging system (5 volts and 4 amps) that allows you to recharge the device very quickly. You can expect to have the smartphone charged 50% in 20 minutes and a full charge in just under an hour and a half.

First verdict

What is the first impression of this OnePlus 6T? First, very good. Once again, the Chinese brand offers a very successful terminal with some nice new features: better autonomy, a more discreet notch, better photo processing, fingerprint reader under the screen …… However, they still exist deficiencies These include the absence of stereo sound, wireless charging or IP68 certification.

So, is that enough to leave the OP6 behind and opt for the new generation? In my opinion, no, but neither is it an immovable opinion. With this device, OnePlus targets users of previous models (OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T ) and technology enthusiasts who do not want to spend a fortune on their smartphone. With this in mind, OnePlus 6T offers a very good quality-price ratio and is a serious option to consider in the premium smartphone market. Now, it’s not the main killer.
